Who our spoken English classes are for

Most people who join an English speaking course already know the grammar and vocabulary. What they lack is practice speaking under real conditions, with someone correcting them as they go. We place you by level and build the course around the situations where you need to speak.

Working professionals

An English communication course for work

You follow meetings and read reports without trouble, then freeze when it’s your turn to talk. We build the fluency to give updates, disagree politely, ask questions and think on your feet in English.

Interviews & talks

English for high-stakes speaking

Job interviews, client pitches, presentations and panel discussions. Structure what you want to say, deliver it clearly and handle questions, rehearsed with a teacher who gives you specific feedback.

Pronunciation & clarity

Be understood the first time

For speakers who get asked to repeat themselves. We work on the sounds, word stress and rhythm that make speech clearer to international listeners, without trying to erase your accent.

Singaporeans

Switch easily into standard English

For Singaporeans who want to move comfortably between everyday Singlish and the standard English expected in client calls, international meetings and formal settings.

Intermediate learners

From “I can get by” to fluent

For non-native speakers who can hold a conversation but translate in their head, search for words or lose track when native speakers talk fast. More speaking time, faster recall, fewer pauses.

Customer-facing roles

Spoken English for service and sales

Phone and video calls, handling complaints, explaining products and building rapport with international customers. Lessons use the conversations you actually have at work.

What you practise in our English speaking course

Every lesson starts with a clear speaking goal and ends with you performing it: a conversation, a role play or a short talk. Your teacher corrects you in the moment, so mistakes are fixed before they become habits.

  • Fluency. Speaking in longer, connected sentences with fewer pauses and less translating in your head.
  • Pronunciation and clarity. Individual sounds, word stress, sentence rhythm and intonation, so listeners understand you the first time.
  • Listening and responding. Following native speakers at normal speed and replying without delay.
  • Conversation skills. Starting and keeping a conversation going, small talk, networking, turn-taking and polite interruption.
  • Meetings and calls. Giving updates, asking questions, agreeing and disagreeing, and speaking up on video calls.
  • Presentations and interviews. Structuring a talk, opening and closing strongly, and handling questions.
  • Natural, accurate English. Common expressions and phrasal verbs, and the grammar mistakes that matter most when you speak.
  • Progress you can see. Progress reviews and a level test before you move up, with a certificate on completing each level.

Why choose Berlitz for an English speaking course in Singapore

You speak for most of the lesson

Through role plays, discussions and tasks, you spend around 80% of each lesson speaking, not listening to a lecture or filling in worksheets.

English only, from the first minute

The Berlitz Method has been taught in the target language only since 1878. No translation, so you practise thinking in English, which is what makes speech faster.

Native English-speaking, trained teachers

Every teacher is trained in the Berlitz Method and gives immediate, specific feedback on what you say and how you say it.

Private or two-person classes

No waiting for your turn in a big class. In a private lesson every minute of speaking time is yours; semi-private lets you practise with a colleague or partner.

Built around your situations

Your meetings, your presentations, your customers. Content is tailored to what you need to say, so you skip what you don’t.

More than 140 years of language teaching

Berlitz has taught languages since 1878, with more than 500 language centres worldwide. The Singapore centre is at Ngee Ann City, Orchard Road.

English speaking course in Singapore: common questions

How is an English speaking course different from a general English course?

A general course covers speaking, listening, reading and writing evenly. An English speaking course (sometimes called a spoken English course) puts most of the lesson time into speaking and listening: conversation, role plays, presentations and pronunciation work. Grammar and vocabulary are taught as you need them to speak, not as separate topics.

Will the course change my accent?

The goal is clarity, not a new accent. Your teacher works on the specific sounds, stress and rhythm that cause listeners to misunderstand you. Most people keep their accent and become much easier to understand.

I’m Singaporean and speak Singlish. Can this help?

Yes. Many students want to switch more easily into standard English for work, client calls and international meetings. Lessons practise those situations directly, so the switch becomes automatic.

Is this an English communication course?

Yes. Speaking is the core, but lessons also cover listening, responding, and the communication skills that go with them: running a meeting, presenting, handling questions, small talk and phone or video calls. In a private course you choose the balance.

How quickly will my spoken English improve?

It depends on your starting level and how often you have lessons. Most students notice they hesitate less within the first few weeks of regular lessons. Your Program Advisor will recommend a number of lessons after a short speaking assessment.

Can I prepare for a specific interview or presentation?

Yes. Bring the job description, your slides or your talking points, and your teacher will build lessons around rehearsing them, with feedback on content, delivery and how you handle questions.

I’m a beginner. Is this course right for me?

If you are starting from little or no English, our English course for foreigners starts at basic level and builds speaking from the first lesson. You can move into spoken English work as your level grows.

Where are the spoken English classes held?

In person at 391B Orchard Road #16-01 Ngee Ann City Tower B, Singapore 238874, a short walk from Orchard and Somerset MRT. Lessons are also available live online, so you can join from anywhere in Singapore.

Can I do lessons online instead?

Yes. Every package can be taken in person at Orchard Road or online via live video, and you can switch between the two.

Are the lessons SkillsFuture-eligible?

No. Berlitz Singapore courses are not SkillsFuture-claimable. Some employers do cover language training; ask your HR.

Can my company send a team?

Yes. For groups of employees, see our corporate language training, which can be delivered at your workplace.
